The technology industry is continuing to grow at record pace here in New Zealand. It’s now our fastest growing export sector and IT exports are expected to hit $15bn by 2025. There’s a huge opportunity for innovative tech companies to make their mark outside of NZ.
Last week, we were excited to be a part of NZTE’s Business in the Clouds event alongside other great NZ companies like Xero, Spotlight Reporting and Payment Express. More than 100 small businesses and advisers packed out the New Zealand High Commission Penthouse in London to show how cloud technologies are changing the way we do business (though the views alone were worth the trip!).
London-based Kiwi roastery Volcano Coffee Works demonstrated a day in the life of a modern retailer, from completing their bank reconciliation with Xero on the bus to work, to serving their first customer using Vend POS and Payment Express. Then selling their goods online through their RocketSpark website and at the end of the day using Spotlight Reporting to check how the business is tracking against KPIs.
The opportunity for Kiwis is especially strong in the UK – the region is now our third largest market for IT exports. Daniel Taylor, New Zealand Trade Commissioner for UK & Ireland spoke at the event on the widening market for local businesses:
“We’re seeing sectors that have traditionally not adopted technology really buying into it now because of the need for productivity and efficiency – two areas where New Zealand has real strength.
“The growth’s been really significant. The sector as a whole has grown 14 per cent compounded annually for the last six years, which is massive. It’s now New Zealand’s third largest export. The UK’s a really important part of that and we see it growing significantly over the next few years.”
The evening was topped off with beer tasting from the New Zealand Craft Beer Collective and a short talk from our favourite brewer Stu McKinley, founder of Yeastie Boys, on taking his small business global.
